The classic Lake Kulikalon trek, a three-day route in the Fann Mountains, is among the most popular treks in Tajikistan. The tour starts and ends at Alplagers (mountain huts) at the starting point and leads to several beautiful mountain lake ranges just below the snow-capped peaks.
Today we drive to Pendjikent via border crossing in Jartepa. In Pendjikent you can visit the city. Then it's on to the beautiful Fann Mountains. We arrive in the village of Artuch. From there our trek begins along the river to reach Lake Chukurak at 2450m. From Artuch camp we slowly ascend to Lake Chukurak. We set up our camp on the shore of the lake. Overnight in tent.
2 hour drive, walking time: 2-3 hours. Ascent: 250m
A steep but gradual climb from forest to pasture takes us to the Chukurak pass at 3180m. The descent on the other side of the pass opens up to beautiful drier landscapes and to glorious lakes, near which we will have a picnic. We continue on the shore of Lake Kulikalon, a "huge lake" with turquoise waters where we will spend the night at 2750m. On the Chimtarga, the highest peak of the Fann Mountains (5480 m), a wonderful panorama opens up before us. Overnight in tents by Lake Bibijannat (women's paradise).
Walking time: 6-7 hours. Ascent: 980 m. Descent: 450 m.
Today we hike around Kulikalon Lake, the second largest lake in Fan Mountains. We then walk further then easily in the wide valley along the mountain river to the most beautiful Dushokha lake right under the picturesque cliff and peak Maria. The lake is turquoise in colour. We enjoy the delicious picnic at the lake. Afternoon we go back down to camp and go down to Artuch valley. Further we drive back to Samarkand.
